Today my daughter asked me…

“Does a spider think of itself as a spider?” (DSV, 6yrs5mo)

A little firecracker she is…always keeping her Appa on his toes. Made me think for a minute.

Does a spider think of itself as a spider?

I answered with some more questions. We had a conversation about science. And humans. And non-humans. And even what ‘thinking’ is. I daresay we went nowhere.

Piles of wood help create habitats for insects aka “Insect Hotels”

Standard

Which then helps overall biodiversity.

Cos I don’t know if you’ve heard, but we’re going through an insect Armageddon…and if the insects go, we almost certainly go with them.

Check out this link for some more information on creating wood piles as mini habitats on your property:

These are some “insect hotels” I created on the fly in the backyard of our family home, 100th Monkey Urban Farm. I’m proud of them and I don’t care what fellow invasives think…ha!

But I do care what my bff Molly thinks.
Piles of wood and removed plants constitute Insect Hotel #1 at 100th Monkey.
Tied up twigs constitute the makeup of Insect Hotel #2…
…and Hotel #3.

Be well, fellow invasives. For Memento Mori.

I felt like Rocky did after winning the UFC welterweight championship, when I got the emails from my uncle and aunt yesterday in response for fulfilling a long held dream of opening a nature reserve in my late baby cousin’s name…

I never forgot da, Vaddu…

I never forgot the promise I made to you.

Onward to fulfilling more…

No surrender then. No surrender now.

CCS Simple Experiment (photo essay) – Remove fast spreading, rapidly growing weed like plant…

Standard

And see what happens.

Little background:

On our most recent visit to the CCS campsite, I found the place with a rather curious infestation of what I thought was buckthorn. But upon sending photos of the removed plants to professionals at the MITPPC (Minnesota Invasive Terrestrial Plants & Pests Center) at UMN, I received the consensus conclusion that it was/is a poplar with rhizomes.

Check out this link for that previous photo essay – https://loveliberationstruggle.wordpress.com/2022/08/15/ccs-photo-essay-on-buckthorn-a-resilient-innovative-and-tough-plant/

Now, this plant was all over; And all in a matter of a few weeks. I hadn’t noticed them in end May or early June when we were at the campsite prior to this mid August visit.

But it was especially thick on land that had been cleared, such as the garden plot the previous owner had on site. It was joining humans as fellow colonizers.

Thus the first experiment of CCS sprung up. I couldn’t pull it all out from everywhere in the campsite (since, you know, I’m not ten people).

Plus, I actually didn’t want to either. I had already developed a begrudging respect for it’s amazing adaptability and resiliency.

So I decided to mostly just focus on the garden plot. Pull out a bunch. See what happens when we go back in early September. Record findings. Very basic observational empirics.

I took photos of the before and after as best as I could (do bear in mind that I was mostly getting intrinsic value from the workout and my crappy phone only takes photos in black and white).

This is the best closeup of the plant (apart from the closeups in the previous photo essay with roots and all)
The garden plot did not have these plants a couple of months prior…
And now they were in every patch of cleared land.
Less than two months of growth.
Completely taking over the plot.
So I pulled whatever I could out (and trust me it wasn’t all of them, despite it looking like I cleared the plot)
And we’re just going to see what happens to this little space when we go back in early September.
Maybe it’ll zombie-colonize the wood pile.

Cos why the fuck not?
