Cannabis Outreach: coming out of the cannabis closet

Standard

This is a brief position piece on cannabis outreach written with corporate in mind.

Americans for Safe Access has a useful four tenet philosophical framework to cannabis that I believe every imbiber and believer in this amazing plant would find useful – compassion, liberty, democracy, and medical professionalism.

This is a useful philosophy for any approach to healing and health, but for now let’s focus on cannabis outreach, which I would like to re-imagine as “coming out of the cannabis closet”.

For we should all be held to high standards, but none of those standards should include shame and puritanism.

Cannabis outreach should be compassionate (to workers, consumers, and providers), should uphold liberty (give me liberty, or give me…), should be democratic (for workers, consumers, and providers), and should adhere to the highest norms of professionalism.

Utilizing a Mazlowian framework, thereby deriving intrinsic benefit for all people, regardless of outcome, I propose a four-part outreach plan for any small to medium sized cannabis organization to conduct (Captain C, please take note, details would be obviously shop and region dependent):

  1. Parties. Everyone loves a fun get-together and this plant sells itself. Workers should be paid to attend, enjoy themselves, and provide invaluable experiential knowledge. Consumers and providers should be incentivized with free products. The main goal with such a shindig would be, genuinely, for everyone to have a good time, and for cannabis talk to happen on the side.
  2. Incentivized personal outreach. Cannabis imbibers and believers tend to find one another very easily. Everyone is also on social media, and large portions of many relationships are now conducted via the same. Workers, consumers, and providers must be incentivized, with cash and product, to conduct personal outreach that they’re comfortable doing. This diversifies skills and undoes the baggage of shame cannabis unfortunately deals with.
  3. Pricing Strategy. Rec followed medical, which itself, we tend to forget, followed the streets. Thus, industrial cannabis will be competing for a while longer with the informal market, which has far fewer hurdles to cross and gates to be opened. Any professional cannabis outfit has to adhere to a pricing strategy that draws more people from the informal market to professionalized, regulated healing and recreation.
  4. Activism. Stemming directly from the above point, the medical and recreational marijuana industry stands on the shoulders of courageous, proletarian giants who have often been criminalized. Any cannabis company worth its salt (or wants to look at itself in the mirror) has to have an activism portion towards active decriminalization and freeing those incarcerated for participating in the informal cannabis market.

There you go. No charge. Thanks for reading.
